I switched my main account to Nationwide because it offered free use of cards abroad. They claim substituting "free" insurance for this is worth £80 to customers. I already have worldwide travel insurance for self and partner with skiing for £103. To upgrade to this level of cover would cost £90 making it worth £13 to me.
Like many I feel I have been duped.

What is the value of Nationwide “free” travel insurance?
My paid-for family travel insurance with the RAC expires in August. So, should I pay to renew it now that all four of us, as Nationwide FlexAccount holders, are covered by the Nationwide “free” travel insurance? Or, are we? This is the point: we do not know for sure.
The whole point about insurance policies is to provide reassurance and this is precisely what we do not get from Nationwide. With the RAC we have a policy document with the names of those covered, an expiry date and cover limits as well as a list of my accepted pre-existing medical conditions. When me, or my wife, log into our joint Nationwide current account we get a reminder that we might be covered but no confirmation that we are really covered. I phoned the insurance underwriter at the number provided by Nationwide, to negotiate an upgrade to cover my medical conditions and they told me they could do that, but could not actually confirm I was covered. Uhmm, if the underwriter does not know who is covered, how do they deal with claims?
I then phoned Nationwide: they said me and my wife were covered but would not provide an insurance certificate. Also the Nationwide operator could not say whether my two sons, currently included in the RAC policy, are covered: I explained I thought they would be covered because they have their own FlexAccount and, although they are students and do nor credit £ 750 per month, this latter criterion does not seem to apply if you are under 21. The Nationwide operator said she could not say and suggested each of my sons should phone. Convincing two teen-agers to phone a bank to clarify their travel insurance entitlement? And what if they are told they are covered and denied a payment when they claim? Would anybody take out an insurance policy based on a verbal statement that one is covered?
Surely all of us, Nationwide members, are paying for these policy via reduced interest payments or higher charges: Nationwide should either provide a proper service or pass on to us the savings of cancelling this ill-thought travel insurance scheme. I feel inclined myself to renew my paid for RAC travel insurance policy.
