My 70 year old uncle took out a single trip policy for a 10 day ski holiday in Les Arcs. On the second day he had a cardiac arrest and was airlifted to Grenoble, his body was frozen and he was put in an induced hypothermic coma. An extremely stressful time, first assist via Saga have been outstanding. He had declared his diabetes and that it was a ski holiday. ALWAYS tell them everything, there are so many horror stories that say you are not covered, we have been extremely lucky with both the outcome and cover.

Terrible, I paid for the policy and then the day before the holiday was admitted to hospital for suspected appendicitis. 4 months on I am still waiting for them to refund any money what so ever. They refused to accept the hospital notes and paperwork as proof I was in hospital and insisted my doctor signed a form saying she had no clue where I was but given the hospital reports probably in hospital. Then they lost the paperwork, when sent again I was told it was all being processed (after a month of them having the documents) but instead of issuing a cheque they then sent another email saying they were rejecting every claim as despite the fact I was not there and had all the bookings and costs they wanted an official cancellation invoice. Of the 6 claims I had 3 did not issue cancellation invoices, when they are disputing saying I can have no payout and it's not thier fault that the US don't issue the correct papaper work. My travel agent who booked the flights is not adequate proof that I did not travel, they want detailed letters from both Continental airlines and United airlines as to why I was not on the flight (I have had no communication with these at all). The case is still on going, after 4 months I am starting to think about going to the small claims court to get my money back. Avoid them at all costs, it's very easy to purchase with them however, when you need the support they are not there.

Following a road accident abroad in which all our party were taken to hospital, to where we didn’t know, and losing all travel documents to the police and luggage to the recovery company. Our first contact with Insure and Go was through their emergency help line. Although very pleasant, sending faxes to some remote number in the hospital regarding “permission to fly” (absolutely useless) and suggesting they organise a taxi to take us to the airport (which never happened) they did nothing more. We were left to sort everything out ourselves.
On return to the UK my claim, not for a king’s ransom, has taken months. I have supplied hospital reports, receipts, been asked to prove tickets were not transferrable, and asked for written receipts from the airline despite booking by phone from abroad. I needed to obtain a police report organised from the UK to a local police station that didn’t speak English.
They seem to think on return to the airport, we diverted to a casualty department for a social visit and missed our flights on purpose.
Having done all they asked I still await a decision, let alone a settlement, less all the individual excess deductions. AVOID AT ALL COSTS

watchdog would be good.

I switched my main account to Nationwide because it offered free use of cards abroad. They claim substituting "free" insurance for this is worth £80 to customers. I already have worldwide travel insurance for self and partner with skiing for £103. To upgrade to this level of cover would cost £90 making it worth £13 to me.
Like many I feel I have been duped.

My problem started when I booked a train ticket through www.trainline.com. I took out insurance with Columbus Direct through
trainline, money took out of my account but no policy.
Over ten days and six emails still no policy.
I shall never ever deal with the incompetent Columbus Direct again.

I had to make a small £200 claim for some treatment my wife needed in the USA.
They settled in the end but it wasn't worth the effort.
They won't pay for anything up front so I had to pay myself and then to deal with trying to claim back when I got home.
They make you jump through one hoop after another, overly complicated forms, no end of copy documents, repeatedly asking for info I'd already provided. Each time taking weeks to respond.
At the end of it all the incompetent "Global Response" company they use agreed to cover the claim, only to then tell me to contact another company "Drakefield Insurance" (whoever they are) to arrange payment.
Drakefield then asked for yet more forms completed & for all the same copy documents supplied before, it was unbelievable. Useless and a complete rip off.

Purchased annual insurance with Columbus in March 2011 but unfortunately had to cancel our holiday in August, we were travelling in September. They have been totally unhelpfull do not wish to discuss anything on the phone and just reply with the same statements, saying as per Clause ..... you should have informed us of your problem. Anyone insured with this company PLEASE PLEASE let them know if you have anything minor, even a cold as potentially you could get a chest infection or pheumonia and have to cancel, and if you have not told them they will NOT PAY OUT. We have not had our holiday and have now lost our money - DO NOT USE COLUMBUS INSURANCE!

Needed to claim for canceeled trip in July. Assured it would all be fine. Sento ff claim and medical form (cost of £50). Rang a week later to be told it had been received and woul be processed in 10 days. Rang 2 weeks later to be told theyd lost the form. Sent another 1 (£50 again). Rang mid august and told it was all ok just checking some details with trip organiser end august confirmed they had details required and would pay out mid september told cheque on its way. 10 days later said they would stop first cheque and send another. End september made a formal complaint and was told cheque would be sent that day. 3 further calls and e-mails still no cheque. Bloody useless.
